Achieving wise use of wetlands is at the heart of MedWet efforts, to
ensure that people have access to wetland resources, to alleviate
poverty and achieve food and water security and at the same time to
maintain the biodiversity of wetlands.
In line
with the Ramsar Strategy 2003-2008 and the Terms of Reference of the
Initiative, MedWet seeks to deliver its
commitment through four pillars of action:
Working to promote sustainable use of wetland resources and to
mainstream the value of wise use of wetlands within society
Seek
to expand the list of Wetland Sites of International Importance
to establish a wider ecological network of well managed and
monitored wetlands
Promoting international cooperation and sharing of information
and expertise, and increasing the flow of financial resources
and relevant technologies to developing countries
To coordinate with other international initiatives in the
region, and globally.
MedWet
provides assistance to help countries build their own knowledge base
and capacity to manage wetlands. Where data on wetlands is lacking
MedWet provides tools that enable wetland managers and scientists to
gather high quality information and prepare wetland inventories.
When wetland stakeholders need to draw on expertise to design management
plans, MedWet
provides training, technical skills and facilitates international exchange of
expertise.
By
providing objective frameworks for the management of wetlands MedWet
contributes to avoiding conflicts and build consensus among
different wetland stakeholders.
